Livio SpringandGitHub 1a0588fef1 fix(idp): SAML signature algorithm (#10795)
# Which Problems Are Solved

https://github.com/zitadel/zitadel/pull/10520 added the possibility to
specify the signature algorithm for SAML auth requests. After releasing,
customer noticed that the Console UI would not correctly display the
selected algorithm and that it was not used in the login V1.

# How the Problems Are Solved

- Correctly map the algorithm in the UI
- Provide the option to the idp when creating a SAML request in login V1

Livio SpringandGitHub f7fbd0cdfd chore: use postgres 17 (#10797)
# Which Problems Are Solved

The current cache interface implementation for postgres is not

Livio SpringandGitHub bb9e557760 test: make session integration tests less eventually consistent (#10790)
# Which Problems Are Solved

While reviewing #9954, i noticed eventual consistency issues in the
session integration tests. All creation and change dates as well as
checked_at were tested using a `window` duration, typically one minute
from `time.Now()`. If some precondition took longer, they would all
fail.

# How the Problems Are Solved

Changed the tests to use the information returned by the creation / set
session calls and make sure they're in those timeframes.
Added a clock skew for the factor checks, since there's an inconsistency
in the event payload and event date: #10791

Livio SpringandGitHub 16906d2c2c fix(export): add sorting when searching users to prevent error (#10777)
# Which Problems Are Solved

When exporting users, an error `QUERY-AG4gs` was returned. This was due
to #10750, where the orderBy column was added to the query to prevent
the exact same error. In case there was no sorting column specified,
such as the export, the query would fail.

2c0ee0008f fix(api): sorting on list users endpoints (#10750)
# Which Problems Are Solved

#10415 added the possibility to filter users based on metadata. To
prevent duplicate results an sql `DISTINCT` was added. This resulted in
issues if the list was sorted on string columns like `username` or
`displayname`, since they are sorted using `lower`. Using `DISTINCT`
requires the `order by` column to be part of the `SELECT` statement.

# How the Problems Are Solved

Added the order by column to the statement.

Livio SpringandGitHub 5329d50509 fix: correct user self management on metadata and delete (#10666)
# Which Problems Are Solved

This PR fixes the self-management of users for metadata and own removal
and improves the corresponding permission checks.
While looking into the problems, I also noticed that there's a bug in
the metadata mapping when using `api.metadata.push` in actions v1 and
that re-adding a previously existing key after its removal was not
possible.

# How the Problems Are Solved

- Added a parameter `allowSelfManagement` to checkPermissionOnUser to
not require a permission if a user is changing its own data.
- Updated use of `NewPermissionCheckUserWrite` including prevention of
self-management for metadata.
- Pass permission check to the command side (for metadata functions) to
allow it implicitly for login v1 and actions v1.
- Use of json.Marshal for the metadata mapping (as with
`AppendMetadata`)
- Check the metadata state when comparing the value.

integration test helper function to allow defining specific roles.

Livio SpringandGitHub ee92560f32 fix(projections): handle reduce error by updating failed events (#10726)
# Which Problems Are Solved

I noticed that a failure in the projections handlers `reduce` function
(e.g. creating the statement or checking preconditions for the
statement) would not update the `failed_events2` table.
This was due to a wrong error handling, where as long as the
`maxFailureCount` was not reached, the error was returned after updating
the `failed_events2` table, which causes the transaction to be rolled
back and thus losing the update.

# How the Problems Are Solved

Wrap the error into an `executionError`, so the transaction is not
rolled back.

Livio SpringandGitHub 79809d0199 fix(actions v2): send event_payload on event executions again (#10651)
# Which Problems Are Solved

It was noticed that on actions v2 when subscribing to events, the
webhook would always receive an empty `event_payload`:
```
{
    "aggregateID": "336494809936035843",
    "aggregateType": "user",
    "resourceOwner": "336392597046099971",
    "instanceID": "336392597046034435",
    "version": "v2",
    "sequence": 1,
    "event_type": "user.human.added",
    "created_at": "2025-09-05T08:55:36.156333Z",
    "userID": "336392597046755331",
    "event_payload":
    {}
}
```

The problem was due to using `json.Marshal` on the `Event` interface,
where the underlying `BaseEvent` prevents the data to be marshalled:

https://github.com/zitadel/zitadel/blob/131f70db3423b80da1b038a822da59c908e4ffa6/internal/eventstore/event_base.go#L38

Livio SpringandGitHub 2dbe21fb30 feat(service ping): add additional resource counts (#10621)
# Which Problems Are Solved

Using the service ping, we want to have some additional insights to how
zitadel is configured. The current resource count report contains
already some amount of configured policies, such as the login_policy.
But we do not know if for example MFA is enforced.

# How the Problems Are Solved

- Added the following counts to the report:
  - service users per organization
  - MFA enforcements (though login policy)
  - Notification policies with password change option enabled
  - SCIM provisioned users (using user metadata)
- Since all of the above are conditional based on at least a column
inside a projection, a new `migration.CountTriggerConditional` has been
added, where a condition (column values) and an option to track updates
on that column should be considered for the count.
- For this to be possible, the following changes had to be made to the
existing sql resources:
- the `resource_name` has been added to unique constraint on the
`projection.resource_counts` table
- triggers have been added / changed to individually track `INSERT`,
`UPDATE`(s) and `DELETE` and be able to handle conditions
- an optional argument has been added to the
`projections.count_resource()` function to allow providing the
information to `UP` or `DOWN` count the resource on an update.

5d2d1d6da6 feat(OIDC): handle logout hint on end_session_endpoint (#10039)
# Which Problems Are Solved

The OIDC session endpoint allows to pass a `id_token_hint` to identify
the session to terminate. In case the application is not able to pass
that, e.g. Console currently allows multiple sessions to be open, but
will only store the id_token of the current session, allowing to pass
the `logout_hint` to identify the user adds some new possibilities.

# How the Problems Are Solved

In case the end_session_endpoint is called with no `id_token_hint`, but
a `logout_hint` and the v2 login UI is configured, the information is
passed to the login UI also as `login_hint` parameter to allow the login
UI to determine the session to be terminated, resp. let the user decide.

9ebf2316c6 feat: exchange gRPC server implementation to connectRPC (#10145)
# Which Problems Are Solved

The current maintained gRPC server in combination with a REST (grpc)
gateway is getting harder and harder to maintain. Additionally, there
have been and still are issues with supporting / displaying `oneOf`s
correctly.
We therefore decided to exchange the server implementation to
connectRPC, which apart from supporting connect as protocol, also also
"standard" gRCP clients as well as HTTP/1.1 / rest like clients, e.g.
curl directly call the server without any additional gateway.

# How the Problems Are Solved

- All v2 services are moved to connectRPC implementation. (v1 services
are still served as pure grpc servers)
- All gRPC server interceptors were migrated / copied to a corresponding
connectRPC interceptor.
- API.ListGrpcServices and API. ListGrpcMethods were changed to include
the connect services and endpoints.
- gRPC server reflection was changed to a `StaticReflector` using the
`ListGrpcServices` list.
- The `grpc.Server` interfaces was split into different combinations to
be able to handle the different cases (grpc server and prefixed gateway,
connect server with grpc gateway, connect server only, ...)
- Docs of services serving connectRPC only with no additional gateway
(instance, webkey, project, app, org v2 beta) are changed to expose that
- since the plugin is not yet available on buf, we download it using
`postinstall` hook of the docs

# Additional Changes

- WebKey service is added as v2 service (in addition to the current
v2beta)

Additionally we discussed in the sprint review, that we could randomize
the default interval to prevent all systems to report data at the very
same time and also require a minimal interval.

# How the Problems Are Solved

- fixed the endpoint
- If the interval is set to @daily (default), we generate a random time
(minute, hour) as a cron format.
- Check if the interval is more than 30min and return an error if not.
- Fixed yaml indent on `ResourceCount`

Livio SpringandGitHub f93a35c7a8 feat: implement service ping (#10080)
This PR is still WIP and needs changes to at least the tests.

# Which Problems Are Solved

To be able to report analytical / telemetry data from deployed Zitadel
systems back to a central endpoint, we designed a "service ping"
functionality. See also https://github.com/zitadel/zitadel/issues/9706.
This PR adds the first implementation to allow collection base data as
well as report amount of resources such as organizations, users per
organization and more.

# How the Problems Are Solved

- Added a worker to handle the different `ReportType` variations.
- Schedule a periodic job to start a `ServicePingReport`
- Configuration added to allow customization of what data will be
reported
- Setup step to generate and store a `systemID`

Livio SpringandGitHub 71575e8d67 fix(webauthn): allow to use "old" passkeys/u2f credentials on session API (#10150)
# Which Problems Are Solved

To prevent presenting unusable WebAuthN credentials to the user /
browser, we filtered out all credentials, which do not match the
requested RP ID. Since credentials set up through Login V1 and Console
do not have an RP ID stored, they never matched. This was previously
intended, since the Login V2 could be served on a separate domain.
The problem is, that if it is hosted on the same domain, the credentials
would also be filtered out and user would not be able to login.

# How the Problems Are Solved

Change the filtering to return credentials, if no RP ID is stored and
the requested RP ID matches the instance domain.

# Which Problems Are Solved

The current user V2 API returns a `[]byte` containing a whole HTML
document including the form on `StartIdentifyProviderIntent` for intents
based on form post (e.g. SAML POST bindings). This is not usable for
most clients as they cannot handle that and render a whole page inside
their app.
For redirect based intents, the url to which the client needs to
redirect is returned.

# How the Problems Are Solved

- Changed the returned type to a new `FormData` message containing the
url and a `fields` map.
- internal changes:
- Session.GetAuth now returns an `Auth` interfacce and error instead of
(content string, redirect bool)
- Auth interface has two implementations: `RedirectAuth` and `FormAuth`
- All use of the GetAuth function now type switch on the returned auth
object
- A template has been added to the login UI to execute the form post
automatically (as is).

# Additional Changes

- Some intent integration test did not check the redirect url and were
wrongly configured.

Livio SpringandGitHub 63c92104ba chore: service ping api design (#9984)
# Which Problems Are Solved

Add the possibility to report information and analytical data from
(self-hosted) ZITADEL systems to a central endpoint.
To be able to do so an API has to be designed to receive the different
reports and information.

# How the Problems Are Solved

- Telemetry service definition added, which currently has two endpoints:
- ReportBaseInformation: To gather the zitadel version and instance
information such as id and creation date
- ReportResourceCounts: Dynamically report (based on #9979) different
resources (orgs, users per org, ...)
- To be able to paginate and send multiple pages to the endpoint a
`report_id` is returned on the first page / request from the server,
which needs to be passed by the client on the following pages.
- Base error handling is described in the proto and is based on gRPC
standards and best practices.

Livio SpringandGitHub e2a61a6002 docs(api): remove unreleased services from api reference (#10015)
# Which Problems Are Solved

As we migrate resources to the new API, whenever a an implementation got
merged, the API reference was added to the docs sidenav. As these new
services and their implementation are not yet released, it can be
confusing for developers as the corresponding endpoints return 404 or

Livio SpringandGitHub 15902f5bc7 fix(cache): prevent org cache overwrite by other instances (#10012)
# Which Problems Are Solved

A customer reported that randomly certain login flows, such as automatic
redirect to the only configured IdP would not work. During the
investigation it was discovered that they used that same primary domain
on two different instances. As they used the domain for preselecting the
organization, one would always overwrite the other in the cache. Since
The organization and especially it's policies could not be retrieved on
the other instance, it would fallback to the default organization
settings, where the external login and the corresponding IdP were not
configured.

# How the Problems Are Solved

Include the instance id in the cache key for organizations to prevent
overwrites.

Livio SpringandGitHub c097887bc5 fix: validate proto header and provide https enforcement (#9975)
# Which Problems Are Solved

ZITADEL uses the notification triggering requests Forwarded or
X-Forwarded-Proto header to build the button link sent in emails for
confirming a password reset with the emailed code. If this header is
overwritten and a user clicks the link to a malicious site in the email,
the secret code can be retrieved and used to reset the users password
and take over his account.

Accounts with MFA or Passwordless enabled can not be taken over by this
attack.

# How the Problems Are Solved

# Which Problems Are Solved

The login v1 allowed to use JWTs as IdP using the JWT IDP. The login V2
uses idp intents for such cases, which were not yet able to handle JWT
IdPs.

# How the Problems Are Solved

- Added handling of JWT IdPs in `StartIdPIntent` and `RetrieveIdPIntent`
- The redirect returned by the start, uses the existing `authRequestID`

any authentication method, need to be able to do so. This might require
a new invitation code, which was currently not possible since creation
was prevented for users with verified emails.

has been deprecated in favor of the `CreateInviteCode`

2cf3ef4de4 feat: federated logout for SAML IdPs (#9931)
# Which Problems Are Solved

Currently if a user signs in using an IdP, once they sign out of
Zitadel, the corresponding IdP session is not terminated. This can be
the desired behavior. In some cases, e.g. when using a shared computer
it results in a potential security risk, since a follower user might be
able to sign in as the previous using the still open IdP session.

# How the Problems Are Solved

- Admins can enabled a federated logout option on SAML IdPs through the
Admin and Management APIs.
- During the termination of a login V1 session using OIDC end_session
endpoint, Zitadel will check if an IdP was used to authenticate that
session.
- In case there was a SAML IdP used with Federated Logout enabled, it
will intercept the logout process, store the information into the shared
cache and redirect to the federated logout endpoint in the V1 login.
- The V1 login federated logout endpoint checks every request on an
existing cache entry. On success it will create a SAML logout request
for the used IdP and either redirect or POST to the configured SLO
endpoint. The cache entry is updated with a `redirected` state.
- A SLO endpoint is added to the `/idp` handlers, which will handle the
SAML logout responses. At the moment it will check again for an existing
federated logout entry (with state `redirected`) in the cache. On
success, the user is redirected to the initially provided
`post_logout_redirect_uri` from the end_session request.

# Which Problems Are Solved

A customer reached out that after an upgrade, actions would always fail
with the error "host is denied" when calling an external API.
This is due to a security fix
(https://github.com/zitadel/zitadel/security/advisories/GHSA-6cf5-w9h3-4rqv),
where a DNS lookup was added to check whether the host name resolves to
a denied IP or subnet.
If the lookup fails due to the internal DNS setup, the action fails as
well. Additionally, the lookup was also performed when the deny list was
empty.

# How the Problems Are Solved

Livio SpringandGitHub 4e1868e9bb fix: prevent panic when retrieving session by id in internal calls (#9442)
# Which Problems Are Solved

#9110 introduced more possibilities to search for "own" sessions. Due to

8f88c4cf5b feat: add PKCE option to generic OAuth2 / OIDC identity providers (#9373)
# Which Problems Are Solved

Some OAuth2 and OIDC providers require the use of PKCE for all their
clients. While ZITADEL already recommended the same for its clients, it
did not yet support the option on the IdP configuration.

# How the Problems Are Solved

- A new boolean `use_pkce` is added to the add/update generic OAuth/OIDC
endpoints.
- A new checkbox is added to the generic OAuth and OIDC provider
templates.
- The `rp.WithPKCE` option is added to the provider if the use of PKCE
has been set.
- The `rp.WithCodeChallenge` and `rp.WithCodeVerifier` options are added
to the OIDC/Auth BeginAuth and CodeExchange function.
- Store verifier or any other persistent argument in the intent or auth
request.
- Create corresponding session object before creating the intent, to be
able to store the information.
- (refactored session structs to use a constructor for unified creation
and better overview of actual usage)

Here's a screenshot showing the URI including the PKCE params:

911200aa9b feat(api): allow Device Authorization Grant using custom login UI (#9387)
# Which Problems Are Solved

The OAuth2 Device Authorization Grant could not yet been handled through
the new login UI, resp. using the session API.
This PR adds the ability for the login UI to get the required
information to display the user and handle their decision (approve with
authorization or deny) using the OIDC Service API.

# How the Problems Are Solved

- Added a `GetDeviceAuthorizationRequest` endpoint, which allows getting
the `id`, `client_id`, `scope`, `app_name` and `project_name` of the
device authorization request
- Added a `AuthorizeOrDenyDeviceAuthorization` endpoint, which allows to
approve/authorize with the session information or deny the request. The
identification of the request is done by the `device_authorization_id` /
`id` returned in the previous request.
- To prevent leaking the `device_code` to the UI, but still having an
easy reference, it's encrypted and returned as `id`, resp. decrypted
when used.
- Fixed returned error types for device token responses on token
endpoint:
- Explicitly return `access_denied` (without internal error) when user
denied the request
  - Default to `invalid_grant` instead of `access_denied`
- Explicitly check on initial state when approving the reqeust
- Properly handle done case (also relates to initial check)
- Documented the flow and handling in custom UIs (according to OIDC /
SAML)

# Additional Changes

- fixed some typos and punctuation in the corresponding OIDC / SAML
guides.
- added some missing translations for auth and saml request

# Which Problems Are Solved

As reported in #9311, even when providing a `x-zitadel-login-client`

Livio SpringandGitHub 990e1982c7 fix(OTEL): reduce high cardinality in traces and metrics (#9286)
# Which Problems Are Solved

There were multiple issues in the OpenTelemetry (OTEL) implementation
and usage for tracing and metrics, which lead to high cardinality and
potential memory leaks:
- wrongly initiated tracing interceptors
- high cardinality in traces:
  - HTTP/1.1 endpoints containing host names
- HTTP/1.1 endpoints containing object IDs like userID (e.g.
`/management/v1/users/2352839823/`)
- high amount of traces from internal processes (spooler)
- high cardinality in metrics endpoint:
  - GRPC entries containing host names
  - notification metrics containing instanceIDs and error messages

# How the Problems Are Solved

- Properly initialize the interceptors once and update them to use the
grpc stats handler (unary interceptors were deprecated).
- Remove host names from HTTP/1.1 span names and use path as default.
- Set / overwrite the uri for spans on the grpc-gateway with the uri
pattern (`/management/v1/users/{user_id}`). This is used for spans in
traces and metric entries.
- Created a new sampler which will only sample spans in the following
cases:
  - remote was already sampled
- remote was not sampled, root span is of kind `Server` and based on
fraction set in the runtime configuration
- This will prevent having a lot of spans from the spooler back ground
jobs if they were not started by a client call querying an object (e.g.
UserByID).
- Filter out host names and alike from OTEL generated metrics (using a
`view`).
- Removed instance and error messages from notification metrics.

instance selection are only used for the environment.json, but not on

Livio SpringandGitHub 40082745f4 fix(login): allow fallback to local auth in case of IdP errors (#9178)
# Which Problems Are Solved

The current login will always prefer external authentication (through an
IdP) over local authentication. So as soon as either the user had
connected to an IdP or even when the login policy was just set up to
have an IdP allowed, users would be redirected to that IdP for
(re)authentication.
This could lead to problems, where the IdP was not available or any
other error occurred in the process (such as secret expired for
EntraID).
Even when local authentication (passkeys or password) was allowed for
the corresponding user, they would always be redirected to the IdP
again, preventing any authentication. If admins were affected, they
might not even be able to update the client secret of the IdP.

# How the Problems Are Solved

Errors during the external IdP flow are handled in an
`externalAuthFailed` function, which will check if the organisation
allows local authentication and if the user has set up such.
If either password or passkeys is set up, the corresponding login page
will be presented to the user. As already with local auth passkeys is
preferred over password authentication.
The user is informed that the external login failed and fail back to
local auth as an error on the corresponding page in a focused mode. Any
interaction or after 5 second the focus mode is disabled.

fa5e590aab fix(idp): prevent server errors for idps using form post for callbacks (#9097)
# Which Problems Are Solved

Some IdP callbacks use HTTP form POST to return their data on callbacks.
For handling CSRF in the login after such calls, a 302 Found to the

7f0378636b fix(notifications): improve error handling (#8994)
# Which Problems Are Solved

While running the latest RC / main, we noticed some errors including
context timeouts and rollback issues.

# How the Problems Are Solved

- The transaction context is passed and used for any event being written
and for handling savepoints to be able to handle context timeouts.
- The user projection is not triggered anymore. This will reduce
unnecessary load and potential timeouts if lot of workers are running.
In case a user would not be projected yet, the request event will log an
error and then be skipped / retried on the next run.
- Additionally, the context is checked if being closed after each event
process.
- `latestRetries` now correctly only returns the latest retry events to
be processed
- Default values for notifications have been changed to run workers less
often, more retry delay, but less transaction duration.

Livio SpringandGitHub ffe9570776 fix(saml): improve error handling (#8928)
# Which Problems Are Solved

There are multiple issues with the metadata and error handling of SAML:
- When providing a SAML metadata for an IdP, which cannot be processed,
the error will only be noticed once a user tries to use the IdP.
- Parsing for metadata with any other encoding than UTF-8 fails.
- Metadata containing an enclosing EntitiesDescriptor around
EntityDescriptor cannot be parsed.
- Metadata's `validUntil` value is always set to 48 hours, which causes
issues on external providers, if processed from a manual down/upload.
- If a SAML response cannot be parsed, only a generic "Authentication
failed" error is returned, the cause is hidden to the user and also to
actions.

# How the Problems Are Solved

- Return parsing errors after create / update and retrieval of an IdP in
the API.
- Prevent the creation and update of an IdP in case of a parsing
failure.
- Added decoders for encodings other than UTF-8 (including ASCII,
windows and ISO, [currently
supported](https://github.com/golang/text/blob/efd25daf282ae4d20d3625f1ccb4452fe40967ae/encoding/ianaindex/ianaindex.go#L156))
- Updated parsing to handle both `EntitiesDescriptor` and
`EntityDescriptor` as root element
- `validUntil` will automatically set to the certificate's expiration
time
- Unwrapped the hidden error to be returned. The Login UI will still
only provide a mostly generic error, but action can now access the
underlying error.

Livio SpringandGitHub 8537805ea5 feat(notification): use event worker pool (#8962)
# Which Problems Are Solved

The current handling of notification follows the same pattern as all
other projections:
Created events are handled sequentially (based on "position") by a
handler. During the process, a lot of information is aggregated (user,
texts, templates, ...).
This leads to back pressure on the projection since the handling of
events might take longer than the time before a new event (to be
handled) is created.

# How the Problems Are Solved

- The current user notification handler creates separate notification
events based on the user / session events.
- These events contain all the present and required information
including the userID.
- These notification events get processed by notification workers, which
gather the necessary information (recipient address, texts, templates)
to send out these notifications.
- If a notification fails, a retry event is created based on the current
notification request including the current state of the user (this
prevents race conditions, where a user is changed in the meantime and
the notification already gets the new state).
- The retry event will be handled after a backoff delay. This delay
increases with every attempt.
- If the configured amount of attempts is reached or the message expired
(based on config), a cancel event is created, letting the workers know,
the notification must no longer be handled.
- In case of successful send, a sent event is created for the
notification aggregate and the existing "sent" events for the user /
session object is stored.
- The following is added to the defaults.yaml to allow configuration of
the notification workers:
```yaml
Notifications:
  # The amount of workers processing the notification request events.
  # If set to 0, no notification request events will be handled. This can be useful when running in
  # multi binary / pod setup and allowing only certain executables to process the events.
  # The amount of events a single worker will process in a run.
  RetryWorkers: 1 # ZITADEL_NOTIFIACATIONS_RETRYWORKERS
  # Time interval between scheduled notifications for retry events
