# Which Problems Are Solved
`GenerateRandomString` used for generating codes incl. OTP was
incorrectly ignoring the last rune of the possible set.
# How the Problems Are Solved
Refactored the function to get the full randomness.

# Additional Context
Thanks @AyushParkara for pointing this out.
# Which Problems Are Solved
Zitadel exposes the secrets generator configuration through its admin
api. This allows instance admins to manage them on their own and they
can create overwrite the system / runtime defaults (incl. expiration).
This very much needed in multi-instance scenarios such as zitadel.cloud.
Currently the invite code configuration was not manageable through the
API, but only runtime config.
# How the Problems Are Solved
- added the `invite_code` type to the API allowing it to be set and
retrieved.
- added the type to console's management list
- added the type to be stored on instance setup
- change the `GetSecretGenerator` endpoint to fall back to the runtime
config if no config is stored on the instance itself
- ensure the `length` and at least one charset is enabled, return an
error otherwise
- expiry is not enforced, so 0 allows codes with no expiry (current
state)

# Which Problems Are Solved
Enable FIPS 140-3 compliant build.
# How the Problems Are Solved
- Add runtime config validation, if the FIPS flag is enabled fail the
application when a non-compliant hasher is used, or throw a warning when
a legacy verifier is used
- Add a build matrix for FIPS certified build:
- Go binary is built with `GOFIPS140=certified`
- Login container uses a separate base:
[ubi9](https://catalog.redhat.com/en/software/containers/ubi9/ubi/615bcf606feffc5384e8452e)
from redhat which provides a FIPS certified OpenSSL (used by NodeJS TLS
stack)
- Non-FIPS images where already pushed to both Github Container Registry
and Google Artifact Repository (GAR). Fips images are only pushed to the
GAR.
- Tag versions are suffixed `-fips`. So on release the following images
will be additionally available:
```
europe-docker.pkg.dev/zitadel-common/zitadel-repo/zitadel-login:vX.Y.Z-fips
europe-docker.pkg.dev/zitadel-common/zitadel-repo/zitadel:vX.Y.Z-fips-debug
europe-docker.pkg.dev/zitadel-common/zitadel-repo/zitadel:vX.Y.Z-fips
```
# Other changes
- Bumb Go toolchain. At least v1.25.10 is required for a
GOFIPS140=certified setting.

# Which Problems Are Solved
- Upgrading to `zitadel/passwap` v0.12.1 introduced new encoded-hash
validation paths that still had review feedback open.
- Secret hasher defaults were internally inconsistent (`Hasher.Cost: 4`
vs `Limits.Bcrypt.MinCost: 10`), which could reject hashes created by
the configured hasher.
- New validation error IDs/messages and test coverage needed to be
aligned with project conventions and expected behavior branches.
# How the Problems Are Solved
- Kept the dependency upgrade to `zitadel/passwap` v0.12.1 and completed
the validation integration.
- Updated `ValidateEncodedHash` error handling in
`internal/crypto/passwap.go` to:
- use unique random-style error IDs,
- return `Errors.Hash.NotSupported` for no-verifier cases,
- keep invalid-hash branches mapped to invalid argument errors.
- Expanded `TestHasher_ValidateEncodedHash` in
`internal/crypto/passwap_test.go` to cover and assert:
- bounds error branch,
- no-verifier branch,
- generic invalid-hash branch,
- expected ZITADEL error IDs/messages.
- Restored lost inline verifier-context comments for argon2 and md5plain
verifier entries.
# Additional Changes
- Added the missing explanatory `Limits` comment for `SecretHasher` in
`cmd/defaults.yaml`.
- Corrected `SecretHasher.Limits.Bcrypt.MinCost` from `10` to `4` to
match the configured default bcrypt cost and avoid configuration
footguns.

# Which Problems Are Solved
Currently ZITADEL only allows the use of RSA public keys for machine
user authentication (jwt-bearer grant), including for system API users.
Attempting to use ECDSA (e.g. P-256) or ED25519 keys results in
`Errors.Internal` because `BytesToPublicKey` performs an
`ifc.(*rsa.PublicKey)` type assertion that returns `(nil, nil)` for
non-RSA keys, which then causes a nil key panic in go-jose during JWT
verification.
This is the same fix as #8433 (by @livio-a), rebased onto current
`main`.
# How the Problems Are Solved
- `BytesToPublicKey` now returns `crypto.PublicKey` (the standard
library interface) instead of `*rsa.PublicKey`
- A type switch validates the parsed key is one of `*rsa.PublicKey`,
`*ecdsa.PublicKey`, or `ed25519.PublicKey`
- A new `ErrNoPublicKey` sentinel error is returned for unsupported key
types instead of silently returning nil
- Callers in `system_token.go` and `query/key.go` are updated to use the
generic `crypto.PublicKey` interface
# Additional Changes

# Additional Context
Duplicate of #8433 which has been open since August 2024. We hit this
bug while implementing OIDC bootstrap for an SGX enclave that generates
ECDSA P-256 keys at runtime -- the `AddKey` API accepts the ECDSA SPKI
PEM fine, but the subsequent `jwt-bearer` token exchange fails with
`Errors.Internal` due to the nil key.

# Which Problems Are Solved
`@zitadel/api:generate-go` failed due to duplicate generated files.
https://github.com/zitadel/zitadel/pull/11820 removed the old generated
file and added a generate command to the `internal/crypto/crypto.go`
file. However, there was already a `internal/crypto/generate.go` with a
different output file name (the old file).
# How the Problems Are Solved
Removed the `internal/crypto/generate.go` file and moved the second
generate into `internal/crypto/code.go`.

[#passwap/pull/70](https://github.com/zitadel/passwap/pull/70)
Co-authored-by: Marco A. <[email protected]>
This PR initiates the rework of Zitadel's backend to state-persisted
objects. This change is a step towards a more scalable and maintainable
architecture.
## Changes
* **New `/backend/v3` package**: A new package structure has been
introduced to house the reworked backend logic. This includes:
* `domain`: Contains the core business logic, commands, and repository
interfaces.
* `storage`: Implements the repository interfaces for database
interactions with new transactional tables.
* `telemetry`: Provides logging and tracing capabilities.
* **Transactional Tables**: New database tables have been defined for
`instances`, `instance_domains`, `organizations`, and `org_domains`.
* **Projections**: New projections have been created to populate the new
relational tables from the existing event store, ensuring data
consistency during the migration.
* **Repositories**: New repositories provide an abstraction layer for
accessing and manipulating the data in the new tables.
* **Setup**: A new setup step for `TransactionalTables` has been added
to manage the database migrations for the new tables.
This PR lays the foundation for future work to fully transition to
state-persisted objects for these components, which will improve
performance and simplify data access patterns.
This PR initiates the rework of ZITADEL's backend to state-persisted
objects. This is a foundational step towards a new architecture that
will improve performance and maintainability.
The following objects are migrated from event-sourced aggregates to
state-persisted objects:
* Instances
* incl. Domains
* Orgs
* incl. Domains
The structure of the new backend implementation follows the software
architecture defined in this [wiki
page](https://github.com/zitadel/zitadel/wiki/Software-Architecturel).
This PR includes:
* The initial implementation of the new transactional repositories for
the objects listed above.
* Projections to populate the new relational tables from the existing
event store.
* Adjustments to the build and test process to accommodate the new
backend structure.
This is a work in progress and further changes will be made to complete
the migration.

# Which Problems Are Solved
Implement a new API service that allows management of OIDC signing web
keys.
This allows users to manage rotation of the instance level keys. which
are currently managed based on expiry.
The API accepts the generation of the following key types and
parameters:
- RSA keys with 2048, 3072 or 4096 bit in size and:
- Signing with SHA-256 (RS256)
- Signing with SHA-384 (RS384)
- Signing with SHA-512 (RS512)
- ECDSA keys with
- P256 curve
- P384 curve
- P512 curve
- ED25519 keys
# How the Problems Are Solved
Keys are serialized for storage using the JSON web key format from the
`jose` library. This is the format that will be used by OIDC for
signing, verification and publication.
Each instance can have a number of key pairs. All existing public keys
are meant to be used for token verification and publication the keys
endpoint. Keys can be activated and the active private key is meant to
sign new tokens. There is always exactly 1 active signing key:
1. When the first key for an instance is generated, it is automatically
activated.
2. Activation of the next key automatically deactivates the previously
active key.
3. Keys cannot be manually deactivated from the API
4. Active keys cannot be deleted

- Query methods that later will be used by the OIDC package are already
implemented. Preparation for #8031

# Which Problems Are Solved
We noticed logging where 500: Internal Server errors were returned from
the token endpoint, mostly for the `refresh_token` grant. The error was
thrown by the database as it received non-UTF8 strings for token IDs
Zitadel uses symmetric encryption for opaque tokens, including refresh
tokens. Encrypted values are base64 encoded. It appeared to be possible
to send garbage base64 to the token endpoint, which will pass decryption
and string-splitting. In those cases the resulting ID is not a valid
UTF-8 string.
Invalid non-UTF8 strings are now rejected during token decryption.
# How the Problems Are Solved
- `AESCrypto.DecryptString()` checks if the decrypted bytes only contain
valid UTF-8 characters before converting them into a string.
- `AESCrypto.Decrypt()` is unmodified and still allows decryption on
non-UTF8 byte strings.
- `FromRefreshToken` now uses `DecryptString` instead of `Decrypt`
# Additional Changes
- Unit tests added for `FromRefreshToken` and
`AESCrypto.DecryptString()`.
- Fuzz tests added for `FromRefreshToken` and
`AESCrypto.DecryptString()`. This was to pinpoint the problem
- Testdata with values that resulted in invalid strings are committed.
In the pipeline this results in the Fuzz tests to execute as regular
unit-test cases. As we don't use the `-fuzz` flag in the pipeline no
further fuzzing is performed.

salt. These are password digests typically created by one of:
- `printf "password" | md5sum` on most linux systems.
- PHP's `md5("password")`
- Python3's `hashlib.md5(b"password").hexdigest()`
# How the Problems Are Solved

# Which Problems Are Solved
Adds the possibility to mirror an existing database to a new one.
For that a new command was added `zitadel mirror`. Including it's
subcommands for a more fine grained mirror of the data.
Sub commands:
* `zitadel mirror eventstore`: copies only events and their unique
constraints
* `zitadel mirror system`: mirrors the data of the `system`-schema
* `zitadel mirror projections`: runs all projections
* `zitadel mirror auth`: copies auth requests
* `zitadel mirror verify`: counts the amount of rows in the source and
destination database and prints the diff.
The command requires one of the following flags:
* `--system`: copies all instances of the system
* `--instance <instance-id>`, `--instance <comma separated list of
instance ids>`: copies only the defined instances
The command is save to execute multiple times by adding the
`--replace`-flag. This replaces currently existing data except of the
`events`-table
# Additional Changes
A `--for-mirror`-flag was added to `zitadel setup` to prepare the new
database. The flag skips the creation of the first instances and initial
run of projections.
It is now possible to skip the creation of the first instance during
setup by setting `FirstInstance.Skip` to true in the steps
configuration.

Even though this is a feature it's released as fix so that we can back port to earlier revisions.
As reported by multiple users startup of ZITADEL after leaded to downtime and worst case rollbacks to the previously deployed version.
The problem starts rising when there are too many events to process after the start of ZITADEL. The root cause are changes on projections (database tables) which must be recomputed. This PR solves this problem by adding a new step to the setup phase which prefills the projections. The step can be enabled by adding the `--init-projections`-flag to `setup`, `start-from-init` and `start-from-setup`. Setting this flag results in potentially longer duration of the setup phase but reduces the risk of the problems mentioned in the paragraph above.
This change adds a core_generate_all make target.
It installs the required tools and runs generate on the complete project.
`golang/mock` is no longer maintained and a fork is available
from the Uber folks. So the latter is used as tool.
All the mock files have been regenerated and are part of the PR.
The obsolete `tools` directory has been removed,
as all the tools are now part of specific make targets.
