# Which Problems Are Solved
- Recovery codes added via `GenerateRecoveryCodes` were never listed as
active authentication methods by `ListAuthenticationMethodTypes`. The
`user_auth_method` projection reducer (`reduceInitAuthMethod`) set the
state to `MFAStateNotReady`, expecting a subsequent verification event
to transition it to `MFAStateReady`. Unlike TOTP, U2F, and Passwordless
— which all have distinct verification events — recovery codes have no
such event, so they were permanently stuck in `NotReady`.
# How the Problems Are Solved
- Introduced a dedicated `reduceAddRecoveryCodes` reducer for
`HumanRecoveryCodesAddedEvent` that sets `MFAStateReady` immediately,
since recovery codes are usable as soon as they are generated.
- Uses `NewUpsertStatement` (instead of `NewCreateStatement`) so that
regenerating recovery codes for the same user updates the existing row
rather than failing on a duplicate key conflict.
- Removed the `HumanRecoveryCodesAddedEvent` case from
`reduceInitAuthMethod`.
# Additional Changes
- Added `UserAuthMethodTypeRecoveryCode` mapping in `authMethodTypeToPb`
unit test.
- Added integration tests for `ListAuthenticationMethodTypes` covering
both the "recovery codes present" and "recovery codes removed" cases.

# Which Problems Are Solved
Currently, metadata can be set/updated only for human users, but it
should be available also for service accounts (machine users).
# How the Problems Are Solved
This is achieved by:
- adding a metadata field at the root level in `CreateUserRequest`,
which makes it available for both `human` and `machine` user types
- returning an error when both the root level and human-level `metadata`
fields are set in the `CreateUserRequest`
- setting `human` and `machine` metadata from the root `metadata` field

# Which Problems Are Solved
In the context of moving our datastore to relational tables, Identity
Provider Intents have no definition of a relational table nor any DB API
that can be used to store the IDP intents as relational objects.
# How the Problems Are Solved
The PR follows the guidelines left in #11190
- A table `zitadel.identity_provider_intents` is created: it defines its
relational constraints (foreign keys) with the other tables, as well as
an ENUM to represent the state of the intent.
- An IDP Intent repository has been created, which offers CRUD
operations implemented as `Create`, `Get`, `Update` and `Delete` methods
for the IDP intent.
- The repository also defines all columns and conditions useful for
performing DB operations on the IDP intents.
- DB mocks have been added as well to ease testing on the `domain`
package.
- Reduction functions have been implemented for the existing IDP events
so to keep the relational table in sync with the event store.
# Additional Changes
To allow testing LDAP intent flow, the `Session.FetchUser()` method has
been extracted to a separate file. A corresponding mock has been created
as well in `fetch_user_mock.go`. The files are mutually excluded and
added at build time through go build tags: the mock is added when the
`integration` tag is specified, while the real implementation is added
when the same tag IS NOT added to the build tags.

# Which Problems Are Solved
Zitadel did not provide easy correlation between errors, logs, traces
and metrics. The configuration for those instrumentations was also not
consistent, with some supporting different exporters then others.
Implementation and parsing of config was also spaghettified over
multiple packages, with awkward parsing and inconsistent naming of
options.
# How the Problems Are Solved
All telemetry is now merged under the name "instrumentation". Why?
1. We thought it was a good idea in the past to call the milestone
exporter `Telemtry` in the runtime config. Calling this `TelemetryV2`
looks weird.
2. Not everything is a meter and not everything is sent (tele...).
3. It's also
[defined](https://opentelemetry.io/docs/concepts/instrumentation/) as
such by the OTEL documentation.
## New features
- Adds structured, context based logging with trace-ID awareness
- Static log fields are added to the context, such as service and
request path
- Static log fields are injected in each logline emitted by the
application
- Structured logs can also be send to an otel exporter
- Structured logs can be printed to StdErr in text and JSON format
- Error sinks make sure every error is logged at the correct level:
- Warnings for client side errors (HTTP 400 range, Invalid request etc)
- Error for server side errors (Internal server errors)
- Metrics can now also be send to a OTEL collector. (previously they
could only be scraped from `/debug/metrics` with prometheus)
## Exporters
This change adds all the exporters supported by OTEL upstream and some
google specific exporters for our cloud deployment.
- StdOut / StdErr: all instrumentations
- OTEL gRPC / HTTP: all instrumentations
- Google: all instrumentations except logging
- Prometheus (pull-based): only metrics
The exception is profiling, which only supports the google exporting due
to lack of support by OTEL upstream.
## Configuration and structure
- All instrumentation is moved into the new `backend/v3/instrumentation`
package. It reuses configuration types, so both code and runtime
configuration are easier to understand.
- The `internal/telemetry` packages are removed.
- Instrumentation is started with a single function and a proper
shutdown function is now provided.
- Legacy configuration is still parsed from the runtime config, as long
as the new configuration is disabled. This allows backporting this
feature to v4 without breaking existing configurations.
# Additional Changes

individually, without NX.

# Which Problems Are Solved
The payload in actions V2 is currently sent as JSON to the target
endpoint. It might get exposed to intermediary infrastructure or logging
systems.
For these scenarios there needs to be an application-layer encryption,
where the provider of the endpoint can define an key to be used for the
encryption.
# How the Problems Are Solved
- Added an additional option to the target to specify the payload type:
`JSON` (current and default), `JWT`, `JWE` (api and console)
- added endpoints to upload and manage public keys (to be used for
encryption) for a target
- updated all action v2 executions (interceptors, oidc, saml, ...) to
provide the `GetActiveSigningWebKey` from queries
- implemented jwt and jwe in the exections incl. refactoring of code and
tests
- changes to the authn_keys table:
- added a `fingerprint` column
- dropped not null constraint on expiration
- moved the `GetSignerOnce` into its own package to prevent circular
dependencies

One-time recovery codes are a common multi-factor authentication (MFA)
backup method, letting users access their account if they lose other MFA
devices. Support for recovery codes can also reduce support burden for
users locked out of their accounts and provide a more secure and
reliable form of verification than security questions.
# Which Problems Are Solved
Zitadel currently lacks support for recovery codes.
# How the Problems Are Solved
This PR partially addresses recovery code support in Zitadel.
Importantly, it adds recovery codes as a new 2FA `Factor` and an
additional `Check` type for the Session API.
```
Example recovery code flow:
1. User generates N new recovery codes using `POST /v2/users/{user_id}/recovery_codes`
2. Zitadel hashes and stores these codes and returns the un-hashed codes in the response
3. User creates new session with an additional check: `recoveryCode`
4. Code is checked against hash and, if valid, cannot be used again
5. User attempts to adds N more codes using the same endpoint
6. If `remaining_codes + N <= RecoveryCodes->MaxCount` config value, then recovery codes are added in addition to original codes
7. User can remove all recovery codes using `DEL /v2/users/:userId/recovery_codes`
```
This PR adds:
- [x] Session recovery_code check support on `POST+PATCH /v2/sessions`
endpoints
- [x] Adds `mfa_recovery_code_checked_at` column (default null) to
`projections.sessions8` table
- [x] Support for `SECOND_FACTOR_TYPE_RECOVERY_CODES` as available 2FA
method on login policy
- [x] Support for importing recovery codes in /import code
Missing, will _not_ implement in this PR:
- [ ] Admin console support for displaying Recovery Code settings for
user(s)
- [ ] Zitadel Typescript login support for recovery codes

- [x] Additional unit and integration tests
- [x] Error translations

# Which Problems Are Solved
A user from `org A` with `ORG_USER_MANAGER` role in `org B` is unable to
list user metadata for a user in `org B`.
# How the Problems Are Solved
The `auth.option` is set to a specific permission (`user.read`) in the
API definition of `ListUserMetadata`, which causes the interceptors to
check for this specific permission. In this case, there is no specific
check for org membership of a user (from org A) in a target organization
(org B), and hence the call fails even though the user has the necessary
permissions.
This has been fixed by setting the `auth.option` to `authenticated`, and
the necessary [permission checks are handled in the
query-layer](https://github.com/zitadel/zitadel/blob/main/internal/query/user_metadata.go#L173).

# Which Problems Are Solved
When listing / searching users, each user got multiplied by the amount
of metadata entries they have, towards the `total_results` count. In
PostgreSQL the `COUNT(*) OVER()` window function does not support
`DISTINCT`. Even tho the query did a distinct select, the count would
still include duplicates.
# How the Problems Are Solved
Wrap the original query in a sub-select, so that the `DISTINCT` gets
handled before the count window function is executed in the outer
function. Filters, permission and solting is applied to the inner query.
Offset, limit and count are applied to the outer query.

# Which Problems Are Solved
Replaces Turbo by Nx and lays the foundation for the next CI
improvements. It enables using Nx Cloud to speed the up the pipelines
that affect any node package.
It streamlines the dev experience for frontend and backend developers by
providing the following commands:
| Task | Command | Notes |
|------|---------|--------|
| **Production** | `nx run PROJECT:prod` | Production server |
| **Develop** | `nx run PROJECT:dev` | Hot reloading development server
|
| **Test** | `nx run PROJECT:test` | Run all tests |
| **Lint** | `nx run PROJECT:lint` | Check code style |
| **Lint Fix** | `nx run PROJECT:lint-fix` | Auto-fix style issues |
The following values can be used for PROJECT:
- @zitadel/zitadel (root commands)
- @zitadel/api,
- @zitadel/login,
- @zitadel/console,
- @zitadel/docs,
- @zitadel/client
- @zitadel/proto
The project names and folders are streamlined:
| Old Folder | New Folder |
| --- | --- |
| ./e2e | ./tests/functional-ui |
| ./load-test | ./benchmark |
| ./build/zitadel | ./apps/api |
| ./console | ./apps/console (postponed so the PR is reviewable) |
Also, all references to the TypeScript repo are removed so we can
archive it.
# How the Problems Are Solved
- Ran `npx nx@latest init`
- Replaced all turbo.json by project.json and fixed the target configs
- Removed Turbo dependency
- All JavaScript related code affected by a PRs changes is
quality-checked using the `nx affected` command
- We move PR checks that are runnable using Nx into the `check`
workflow. For workflows where we don't use Nx, yet, we restore
previously built dependency artifacts from Nx.
- We only use a single and easy to understand dev container
- The CONTRIBUTING.md is streamlined
- The setup with a generated client pat is orchestrated with Nx
- Everything related to the TypeScript repo is updated or removed. A
**Deploy with Vercel** button is added to the docs and the
CONTRIBUTING.md.
# Additional Changes
- NPM package names have a consistent pattern.
- Docker bake is removed. The login container is built and released like
the core container.
- The integration tests build the login container before running, so
they don't rely on the login container action anymore. This fixes
consistently failing checks on PRs from forks.
- The docs build in GitHub actions is removed, as we already build on
Vercel.

# Which Problems Are Solved
The current maintained gRPC server in combination with a REST (grpc)
gateway is getting harder and harder to maintain. Additionally, there
have been and still are issues with supporting / displaying `oneOf`s
correctly.
We therefore decided to exchange the server implementation to
connectRPC, which apart from supporting connect as protocol, also also
"standard" gRCP clients as well as HTTP/1.1 / rest like clients, e.g.
curl directly call the server without any additional gateway.
# How the Problems Are Solved
- All v2 services are moved to connectRPC implementation. (v1 services
are still served as pure grpc servers)
- All gRPC server interceptors were migrated / copied to a corresponding
connectRPC interceptor.
- API.ListGrpcServices and API. ListGrpcMethods were changed to include
the connect services and endpoints.
- gRPC server reflection was changed to a `StaticReflector` using the
`ListGrpcServices` list.
- The `grpc.Server` interfaces was split into different combinations to
be able to handle the different cases (grpc server and prefixed gateway,
connect server with grpc gateway, connect server only, ...)
- Docs of services serving connectRPC only with no additional gateway
(instance, webkey, project, app, org v2 beta) are changed to expose that
- since the plugin is not yet available on buf, we download it using
`postinstall` hook of the docs
# Additional Changes
- WebKey service is added as v2 service (in addition to the current
v2beta)

# Which Problems Are Solved
The current user V2 API returns a `[]byte` containing a whole HTML
document including the form on `StartIdentifyProviderIntent` for intents
based on form post (e.g. SAML POST bindings). This is not usable for
most clients as they cannot handle that and render a whole page inside
their app.
For redirect based intents, the url to which the client needs to
redirect is returned.
# How the Problems Are Solved

url and a `fields` map.
- internal changes:
- Session.GetAuth now returns an `Auth` interfacce and error instead of
(content string, redirect bool)
- Auth interface has two implementations: `RedirectAuth` and `FormAuth`
- All use of the GetAuth function now type switch on the returned auth
object
- A template has been added to the login UI to execute the form post
automatically (as is).
# Additional Changes
- Some intent integration test did not check the redirect url and were
wrongly configured.
# Additional Context
- relates to zitadel/typescript#410
# Which Problems Are Solved
This pull request addresses a significant gap in the user service v2
API, which currently lacks methods for managing machine users.
# How the Problems Are Solved
This PR adds new API endpoints to the user service v2 to manage machine
users including their secret, keys and personal access tokens.
Additionally, there's now a CreateUser and UpdateUser endpoints which
allow to create either a human or machine user and update them. The
existing `CreateHumanUser` endpoint has been deprecated along the
corresponding management service endpoints. For details check the
additional context section.

# Which Problems Are Solved
The login v1 allowed to use JWTs as IdP using the JWT IDP. The login V2
uses idp intents for such cases, which were not yet able to handle JWT
IdPs.
# How the Problems Are Solved
- Added handling of JWT IdPs in `StartIdPIntent` and `RetrieveIdPIntent`
- The redirect returned by the start, uses the existing `authRequestID`
and `userAgentID` parameter names for compatibility reasons.
- Added `/idps/jwt` endpoint to handle the proxied (callback) endpoint ,
which extracts and validates the JWT against the configured endpoint.

# Which Problems Are Solved
Users who started the invitation code verification, but haven't set up
any authentication method, need to be able to do so. This might require
a new invitation code, which was currently not possible since creation
was prevented for users with verified emails.
# How the Problems Are Solved
- Allow creation of invitation emails for users with verified emails.
- Merged the creation and resend into a single method, defaulting the
urlTemplate, applicatioName and authRequestID from the previous code (if
one exists). On the user service API, the `ResendInviteCode` endpoint
has been deprecated in favor of the `CreateInviteCode`

# Which Problems Are Solved
Resource management of projects and sub-resources was before limited by
the context provided by the management API, which would mean you could
only manage resources belonging to a specific organization.
# How the Problems Are Solved
With the addition of a resource-based API, it is now possible to manage
projects and sub-resources on the basis of the resources themselves,
which means that as long as you have the permission for the resource,
you can create, read, update and delete it.
- CreateProject to create a project under an organization
- UpdateProject to update an existing project
- DeleteProject to delete an existing project
- DeactivateProject and ActivateProject to change the status of a
project
- GetProject to query for a specific project with an identifier
- ListProject to query for projects and granted projects
- CreateProjectGrant to create a project grant with project and granted
organization
- UpdateProjectGrant to update the roles of a project grant
- DeactivateProjectGrant and ActivateProjectGrant to change the status
of a project grant
- DeleteProjectGrant to delete an existing project grant
- ListProjectGrants to query for project grants
- AddProjectRole to add a role to an existing project
- UpdateProjectRole to change texts of an existing role
- RemoveProjectRole to remove an existing role
- ListProjectRoles to query for project roles
# Additional Changes
- Changes to ListProjects, which now contains granted projects as well
- Changes to messages as defined in the
[API_DESIGN](https://github.com/zitadel/zitadel/blob/main/API_DESIGN.md)
- Permission checks for project functionality on query and command side
- Added testing to unit tests on command side
- Change update endpoints to no error returns if nothing changes in the
resource
- Changed all integration test utility to the new service
- ListProjects now also correctly lists `granted projects`
- Permission checks for project grant and project role functionality on
query and command side
- Change existing pre checks so that they also work resource specific
without resourceowner
- Added the resourceowner to the grant and role if no resourceowner is
provided
- Corrected import tests with project grants and roles
- Added testing to unit tests on command side
- Change update endpoints to no error returns if nothing changes in the
resource
- Changed all integration test utility to the new service
- Corrected some naming in the proto files to adhere to the API_DESIGN

# Which Problems Are Solved
When retrieving the information of an IdP intent, depending on the IdP
type (e.g. Apple), there was issue when mapping the stored (event)
information back to the specific IdP type, potentially leading to a
panic.
# How the Problems Are Solved
- Correctly initialize the user struct to map the information to.

# Additional Context
- reported by a support request

# Which Problems Are Solved
Currently, users can't delete themselves using the V2 RemoveUser API
because of the redunant API middleware permission check.
On main, using a machine user PAT to delete the same machine user:
```bash
grpcurl -plaintext -H "Authorization: Bearer ${ZITADEL_ACCESS_TOKEN}" -d '{"userId": "318838604669387137"}' localhost:8080 zitadel.user.v2.UserService.DeleteUser
Same on this PRs branch:
```bash
grpcurl -plaintext -H "Authorization: Bearer ${ZITADEL_ACCESS_TOKEN}" -d '{"userId": "318838604669387137"}' localhost:8080 zitadel.user.v2.UserService.DeleteUser

Repeated call
```bash
# How the Problems Are Solved
The middleware permission check is disabled and the
domain.PermissionCheck is used exclusively.
# Additional Changes
A new type command.PermissionCheck allows to optionally accept a
permission check for commands, so APIs with middleware permission checks
can omit redundant permission checks by passing nil while APIs without
middleware permission checks can pass one to the command.
# Which Problems Are Solved
Classic permission checks execute for every returned row on resource
based search APIs. Complete background and problem definition can be
found here: https://github.com/zitadel/zitadel/issues/9188
# How the Problems Are Solved
- PermissionClause function now support dynamic query building, so it
supports multiple cases.
- PermissionClause is applied to all list resources which support org
level permissions.
- Wrap permission logic into wrapper functions so we keep the business
logic clean.
# Additional Changes
- Handle org ID optimization in the query package, so it is reusable for
all resources, instead of extracting the filter in the API.
- Cleanup and test system user conversion in the authz package. (context
middleware)
- Fix: `core_integration_db_up` make recipe was missing the postgres
service.
