# Which Problems Are Solved
Expose impersonating actor to `preAccessToken` and `preUserinfo`
actions.
# How the Problems Are Solved
Provide the `actor` information already present in the OIDC session
model of JWT token to the relevant actions. Both goja-based actions "v1"
and webhook based execution targets carry the actor information now.
Actor remains null in case of non-impersonated tokens. Actor may contain
nested actors to display a delegation chain of impersonators.
# Additional Changes
- dba6261c8ed0dfd00ffde6193910b1405b17432f: refactor `userinfoFlows` to
reduce complexity, add test coverage and solve a couple of potential
bugs.
- `getClientId` in actions was previously undocumented. Added to
documentation.
- A skill that reproduces manual testing using webhook.site or a local
sink.
# Additional Context
- Closes https://github.com/zitadel/zitadel/issues/12097

# Which Problems Are Solved
Since #10666 (v4.1+, backported to v4.x), metadata values set through
actions v1 (`api.metadata.push` and `api.v1.user.appendMetadata`) are
always JSON-encoded via `json.Marshal`. This made the write path
consistent with the JSON-based read path, but removed the ability to
store raw (unencoded) metadata values:
- A scalar string is now always stored quoted (`"de"` instead of `de`).
- The previous byte-array convention (mapping a string to an integer
array in the script, handled by `mapBytesToByteArray` introduced in
#5526) now stores the literal integer-array text (e.g. `[100,101]`)
instead of the raw bytes.
Customers migrating from v3.x whose downstream systems base64-decode
metadata values from tokens and expect raw bytes have no way to produce
them anymore — changing the consuming system is not always possible.
Reverting the default is not an option either, as clients that adopted
actions v1 on v4.x now rely on the JSON encoding.
# How the Problems Are Solved
- Adds a new, opt-in function `api.v1.user.appendMetadataRaw(key,
value)` to the actions v1 login flows (external / internal
authentication post authentication and pre creation), next to the
existing `appendMetadata`.
- The value is stored as raw bytes without JSON encoding:
- a string is stored as its plain UTF-8 bytes (`de`, not `"de"`)
- byte arrays (`Uint8Array` or a plain array of integers 0-255, the old
convention) are stored as-is, so existing v3 scripts using a
string-to-byte-array helper only need to switch the function name
- other types (and empty values) throw an error
- The existing `appendMetadata` and `api.metadata.push` behavior remains
byte-for-byte unchanged.
# Additional Changes
- Documented `appendMetadataRaw` (and the JSON encoding behavior of
`appendMetadata`) in the external and internal authentication actions
docs.
- Added unit tests for the new function (through a real goja runtime)
and a test locking in the existing `appendMetadata` JSON-encoding
behavior.
# Additional Context
- Regression introduced as a side effect of #10666 (which fixed#10470);
the raw byte handling was originally introduced in #5526.
- Reported by a customer upgrading from v3.4.x to v4.16.x, whose
PostAuthentication action maps token payload claims into user metadata.
- Requires backport to v4.x.

# Which Problems Are Solved
Zitadel did not provide easy correlation between errors, logs, traces
and metrics. The configuration for those instrumentations was also not
consistent, with some supporting different exporters then others.
Implementation and parsing of config was also spaghettified over
multiple packages, with awkward parsing and inconsistent naming of
options.
# How the Problems Are Solved
All telemetry is now merged under the name "instrumentation". Why?
1. We thought it was a good idea in the past to call the milestone
exporter `Telemtry` in the runtime config. Calling this `TelemetryV2`
looks weird.
2. Not everything is a meter and not everything is sent (tele...).
3. It's also
[defined](https://opentelemetry.io/docs/concepts/instrumentation/) as
such by the OTEL documentation.
## New features
- Adds structured, context based logging with trace-ID awareness
- Static log fields are added to the context, such as service and
request path
- Static log fields are injected in each logline emitted by the
application
- Structured logs can also be send to an otel exporter
- Structured logs can be printed to StdErr in text and JSON format
- Error sinks make sure every error is logged at the correct level:
- Warnings for client side errors (HTTP 400 range, Invalid request etc)
- Error for server side errors (Internal server errors)
- Metrics can now also be send to a OTEL collector. (previously they
could only be scraped from `/debug/metrics` with prometheus)
## Exporters
This change adds all the exporters supported by OTEL upstream and some
google specific exporters for our cloud deployment.
- StdOut / StdErr: all instrumentations
- OTEL gRPC / HTTP: all instrumentations
- Google: all instrumentations except logging
- Prometheus (pull-based): only metrics
The exception is profiling, which only supports the google exporting due
to lack of support by OTEL upstream.
## Configuration and structure
- All instrumentation is moved into the new `backend/v3/instrumentation`
package. It reuses configuration types, so both code and runtime
configuration are easier to understand.
- The `internal/telemetry` packages are removed.
- Instrumentation is started with a single function and a proper
shutdown function is now provided.
- Legacy configuration is still parsed from the runtime config, as long
as the new configuration is disabled. This allows backporting this
feature to v4 without breaking existing configurations.
# Additional Changes
- Devcontainer: set `$PATH` variable so installed go binaries can be run
individually, without NX.
- NX: install GCI tool to fix imports
# Additional Context
- Closes https://github.com/zitadel/zitadel/issues/8408
- Closes https://github.com/zitadel/zitadel/issues/6664
- Backport to v4
# Which Problems Are Solved
This PR fixes the self-management of users for metadata and own removal
and improves the corresponding permission checks.
While looking into the problems, I also noticed that there's a bug in
the metadata mapping when using `api.metadata.push` in actions v1 and
that re-adding a previously existing key after its removal was not
possible.
# How the Problems Are Solved
- Added a parameter `allowSelfManagement` to checkPermissionOnUser to
not require a permission if a user is changing its own data.
- Updated use of `NewPermissionCheckUserWrite` including prevention of
self-management for metadata.
- Pass permission check to the command side (for metadata functions) to
allow it implicitly for login v1 and actions v1.
- Use of json.Marshal for the metadata mapping (as with
`AppendMetadata`)
- Check the metadata state when comparing the value.
# Additional Changes
- added a variadic `roles` parameter to the `CreateOrgMembership`
integration test helper function to allow defining specific roles.
# Additional Context
- noted internally while testing v4.1.x
- requires backport to v4.x
- closes https://github.com/zitadel/zitadel/issues/10470
- relates to https://github.com/zitadel/zitadel/pull/10426

# Which Problems Are Solved
A customer reached out that after an upgrade, actions would always fail
with the error "host is denied" when calling an external API.
This is due to a security fix
(https://github.com/zitadel/zitadel/security/advisories/GHSA-6cf5-w9h3-4rqv),
where a DNS lookup was added to check whether the host name resolves to
a denied IP or subnet.
If the lookup fails due to the internal DNS setup, the action fails as
well. Additionally, the lookup was also performed when the deny list was
empty.
# How the Problems Are Solved
- Prevent DNS lookup when deny list is empty
- Properly initiate deny list and prevent empty entries
# Additional Changes
- Log the reason for blocked address (domain, IP, subnet)
# Additional Context
- reported by a customer
- needs backport to 2.70.x, 2.71.x and 3.0.0 rc
# Which Problems Are Solved
We found some paths in the login UI, where requests without any
`AuthRequest` were not handled correctly and could potentially panic.
This also includes providing the `AuthRequest` as part of `ctx` object
in actions V1.
# How the Problems Are Solved
- Check for the existance of an `AuthRequest` were needed and return an
error otherwise.
- Provide correct state of the `AuthRequest` for actions V1
# Additional Changes
None
# Additional Context
- Noticed as part of a support request
- requires backport to at least 2.70.x

# Which Problems Are Solved
It was not possible to use the `api.v1.appendUserGrant` function in the
`postCreation` trigger action as documented.
# How the Problems Are Solved
- Correctly initialize the javascript / Goja function
- Added `projectID` and `projectGrantID` (as documented), but kept
`projectId` and `projectGrantId` (for backwards compatibility) when
mapping the object in the `appendUserGrant` function
# Additional Changes
None
# Additional Context
- A customer reached out to support regarding this issue.
- requires back port to 2.70.x
# Which Problems Are Solved
System administrators can block hosts and IPs for HTTP calls in actions.
Using DNS, blocked IPs could be bypassed.
# How the Problems Are Solved
- Hosts are resolved (DNS lookup) to check whether their corresponding
IP is blocked.
# Additional Changes
- Added complete lookup ip address range and "unspecified" address to
the default `DenyList`
chore(fmt): run gci on complete project
Fix global import formatting in go code by running the `gci` command. This allows us to just use the command directly, instead of fixing the import order manually for the linter, on each PR.

This implementation increases parallel write capabilities of the eventstore.
Please have a look at the technical advisories: [05](https://zitadel.com/docs/support/advisory/a10005) and [06](https://zitadel.com/docs/support/advisory/a10006).
The implementation of eventstore.push is rewritten and stored events are migrated to a new table `eventstore.events2`.
If you are using cockroach: make sure that the database user of ZITADEL has `VIEWACTIVITY` grant. This is used to query events.
