# Which Problems Are Solved
We found multiple cases where potentially a panic occurred or could
occur:
- when de/encrypting certain information
- returning apps without any configuration type (?)
- apple IdPs without a proper private key
# How the Problems Are Solved
- Added nil checks
- Check private key format for apple IdPs
- Added necessary helper function
# Additional Changes
Fixed i18n yaml where the IDP errors were indented under `org` instead
of directly under `errors`.
# Additional Context
- requires backport to v4.x

# Which Problems Are Solved
In the context of moving our datastore to relational tables, Identity
Provider Intents have no definition of a relational table nor any DB API
that can be used to store the IDP intents as relational objects.
# How the Problems Are Solved
The PR follows the guidelines left in #11190
- A table `zitadel.identity_provider_intents` is created: it defines its
relational constraints (foreign keys) with the other tables, as well as
an ENUM to represent the state of the intent.
- An IDP Intent repository has been created, which offers CRUD
operations implemented as `Create`, `Get`, `Update` and `Delete` methods
for the IDP intent.
- The repository also defines all columns and conditions useful for
performing DB operations on the IDP intents.
- DB mocks have been added as well to ease testing on the `domain`
package.
- Reduction functions have been implemented for the existing IDP events
so to keep the relational table in sync with the event store.
# Additional Changes
To allow testing LDAP intent flow, the `Session.FetchUser()` method has
been extracted to a separate file. A corresponding mock has been created
as well in `fetch_user_mock.go`. The files are mutually excluded and
added at build time through go build tags: the mock is added when the
`integration` tag is specified, while the real implementation is added
when the same tag IS NOT added to the build tags.

# Which Problems Are Solved
Similar to https://github.com/zitadel/zitadel/pull/11241, there are
additional unit tests where certificates expired.
# How the Problems Are Solved
The tests use dedicated combinations of SAML metadata, certificates and
responses and also already use the `TimeNow` function from the
`crewjam/saml` package to overwrite necessary time validations. This PR
now additionally sets the `Clock` variable in the same package, which is
used in XML validations like the signing.

# Which Problems Are Solved
LDAP binding with non-ASCII characters in DN
# How the Problems Are Solved
The root of the problem is that ParseDN() function messes DN with
non-ASCII character. Instead of using DN object, returned from ParseDN
we use user.DN in binding request. ParseDN stays only for verifying
correctness of DN.

# Which Problems Are Solved
In the SAML responses from some IDPs (e.g. ADFS and Shibboleth), the
`<NameID>` part could be missing in `<Subject>`, and in some cases, the
`<Subject>` part might be missing as well. This causes Zitadel to fail
the SAML login with the following error message:
```
ID=SAML-EFG32 Message=Errors.Intent.ResponseInvalid
```
# How the Problems Are Solved
This is solved by adding a workaround to accept a transient mapping
attribute when the `NameID` or the `Subject` is missing in the SAML
response. This requires setting the custom transient mapping attribute
in the SAML IDP config in Zitadel, and it should be present in the SAML
response as well.

# Which Problems Are Solved
The current user V2 API returns a `[]byte` containing a whole HTML
document including the form on `StartIdentifyProviderIntent` for intents
based on form post (e.g. SAML POST bindings). This is not usable for
most clients as they cannot handle that and render a whole page inside
their app.
For redirect based intents, the url to which the client needs to
redirect is returned.
# How the Problems Are Solved
- Changed the returned type to a new `FormData` message containing the
url and a `fields` map.
- internal changes:
- Session.GetAuth now returns an `Auth` interfacce and error instead of
(content string, redirect bool)
- Auth interface has two implementations: `RedirectAuth` and `FormAuth`
- All use of the GetAuth function now type switch on the returned auth
object
- A template has been added to the login UI to execute the form post
automatically (as is).
# Additional Changes
- Some intent integration test did not check the redirect url and were
wrongly configured.
# Additional Context
- relates to zitadel/typescript#410
# Which Problems Are Solved
The login v1 allowed to use JWTs as IdP using the JWT IDP. The login V2
uses idp intents for such cases, which were not yet able to handle JWT
IdPs.
# How the Problems Are Solved
- Added handling of JWT IdPs in `StartIdPIntent` and `RetrieveIdPIntent`
- The redirect returned by the start, uses the existing `authRequestID`
and `userAgentID` parameter names for compatibility reasons.
- Added `/idps/jwt` endpoint to handle the proxied (callback) endpoint ,
which extracts and validates the JWT against the configured endpoint.

# Which Problems Are Solved
Some OAuth2 and OIDC providers require the use of PKCE for all their
clients. While ZITADEL already recommended the same for its clients, it
did not yet support the option on the IdP configuration.
# How the Problems Are Solved
- A new boolean `use_pkce` is added to the add/update generic OAuth/OIDC
endpoints.
- A new checkbox is added to the generic OAuth and OIDC provider
templates.
- The `rp.WithPKCE` option is added to the provider if the use of PKCE
has been set.
- The `rp.WithCodeChallenge` and `rp.WithCodeVerifier` options are added
to the OIDC/Auth BeginAuth and CodeExchange function.
- Store verifier or any other persistent argument in the intent or auth
request.
- Create corresponding session object before creating the intent, to be
able to store the information.
- (refactored session structs to use a constructor for unified creation
and better overview of actual usage)

# Which Problems Are Solved
SAML IdPs exposing an `EntitiesDescriptor` using an `xsd:duration` time
format for the `cacheDuration` property (e.g. `PT5H`) failed parsing.
# How the Problems Are Solved
Handle the unmarshalling for `EntitiesDescriptor` specifically.
[crewjam/saml](https://github.com/crewjam/saml/blob/bbccb7933d5f60512ebc6caec7120c604581983d/metadata.go#L88-L103)

# Additional Context

# Which Problems Are Solved
There are multiple issues with the metadata and error handling of SAML:
- When providing a SAML metadata for an IdP, which cannot be processed,
the error will only be noticed once a user tries to use the IdP.
- Parsing for metadata with any other encoding than UTF-8 fails.
- Metadata containing an enclosing EntitiesDescriptor around
EntityDescriptor cannot be parsed.
- Metadata's `validUntil` value is always set to 48 hours, which causes
issues on external providers, if processed from a manual down/upload.
- If a SAML response cannot be parsed, only a generic "Authentication
failed" error is returned, the cause is hidden to the user and also to
actions.
# How the Problems Are Solved
- Return parsing errors after create / update and retrieval of an IdP in
the API.
- Prevent the creation and update of an IdP in case of a parsing
failure.
- Added decoders for encodings other than UTF-8 (including ASCII,
windows and ISO, [currently
supported](https://github.com/golang/text/blob/efd25daf282ae4d20d3625f1ccb4452fe40967ae/encoding/ianaindex/ianaindex.go#L156))
- Updated parsing to handle both `EntitiesDescriptor` and
`EntityDescriptor` as root element
- `validUntil` will automatically set to the certificate's expiration
time
- Unwrapped the hidden error to be returned. The Login UI will still
only provide a mostly generic error, but action can now access the
underlying error.

# Which Problems Are Solved
If SAML response validation in crewjam/saml fails, a generic
"Authentication failed" error is thrown. This makes it challenging to
determine the actual cause, since there are a variety of reasons
response validation may fail.
# How the Problems Are Solved
Add a log statement if we receive a response validation error from
crewjam/saml that logs the internal `InvalidResponseError.PrivateErr`
error from crewjam/saml to stdout. We continue to return a generic error
message to the client to prevent leaking data.
Verified by running `go test -v ./internal/idp/providers/saml` in
verbose mode, which output the following line for the "response_invalid"
test case:
```
time="2024-10-03T14:53:10+01:00" level=info msg="invalid SAML response details" caller="/Users/sdouglas/Documents/thirdparty-repos/zitadel/internal/idp/providers/saml/session.go:72" error="cannot parse base64: illegal base64 data at input byte 2"
# Which Problems Are Solved
ZITADEL currently always uses
`urn:oasis:names:tc:SAML:2.0:nameid-format:persistent` in SAML requests,
relying on the IdP to respect that flag and always return a peristent
nameid in order to be able to map the external user with an existing
user (idp link) in ZITADEL.
In case the IdP however returns a
`urn:oasis:names:tc:SAML:2.0:nameid-format:transient` (transient)
nameid, the attribute will differ between each request and it will not
be possible to match existing users.
# How the Problems Are Solved
This PR adds the following two options on SAML IdP:
- **nameIDFormat**: allows to set the nameid-format used in the SAML
Request
- **transientMappingAttributeName**: allows to set an attribute name,
which will be used instead of the nameid itself in case the returned
nameid-format is transient
# Additional Changes
To reduce impact on current installations, the `idp_templates6_saml`
table is altered with the two added columns by a setup job. New
installations will automatically get the table with the two columns
directly.
All idp unit tests are updated to use `expectEventstore` instead of the
deprecated `eventstoreExpect`.
It installs the required tools and runs generate on the complete project.
`golang/mock` is no longer maintained and a fork is available
from the Uber folks. So the latter is used as tool.
All the mock files have been regenerated and are part of the PR.
The obsolete `tools` directory has been removed,
